An Interview with our Owner
Q: What led you to create Indigo Wellness Center? Was there a moment that sparked the idea?
Debi: There wasn’t one moment—there were many. I’ve been in the holistic healing world for over eight years, and I’ve worked out of several different spaces. Unfortunately, many of them weren’t ideal. One place had mold, another had rooms so small you could barely fit a massage table. When I returned to Humboldt County after the pandemic and started doing Reiki again, I found myself in another disappointing space. That’s when it hit me: I could create something better. Something beautiful, intentional, and deeply nourishing—for myself and for others.
Q: What were you seeking in your own healing journey that you now want to offer others?
Debi: I’ve always been on a path of self-discovery, but a major turning point came when my dog was injured in a car accident. She was physically okay, but something felt off. I found a woman who did Reiki for animals and hired her. Watching that session, I was blown away. It was the first time I truly understood the power of energy work—and I felt called to pursue it. That experience shifted everything.
Q: Was opening your own wellness center something you always dreamed of?
Debi: Not at all! I didn’t think I had it in me. I’ve struggled with self-doubt my whole life. But one of my close friends started a business, and I thought, “If she can do it, maybe I can too.” It’s wild to think about how far I’ve come. I never saw myself doing something this bold—but I’m so glad I listened to that little voice that told me to try.
Q: Why the name Indigo? What does it mean to you?
Debi: Indigo has been my favorite color for years. When I was in my twenties and struggling with depression, I used to say I was “feeling indigo” instead of blue. It felt more honest—deeper, richer, more layered. That word stayed with me. It felt like the perfect name for the space I wanted to create: soulful, vibrant, and real.
Q: What do you hope people feel when they walk into Indigo?
Debi: I want them to breathe easier. I’ve always imagined someone stepping into the center and instantly feeling their blood pressure drop. I think design plays a huge role in that—how a space looks and feels impacts how safe and open we are to healing. I want Indigo to feel like a deep exhale.
Q: What does it mean to truly take care of yourself?
Debi: It means creating space. Real, physical time in your schedule to care for you. Not your to-do list. Not other people. Just you. Whether that’s a walk in the woods, a massage, or just 30 minutes of quiet—those moments change everything. You start to feel lighter, more grounded, more like yourself again.
Q: What do you say to people who feel guilty for taking time for themselves?
Debi: If you’re my friend, I’d say: “You idiot! You’re being ridiculous!” (laughs) But seriously, if you’re giving and giving and never filling your own cup, it’s only a matter of time before you burn out. You are worth care. Don’t knock it till you try it.
Q: What makes Indigo Wellness Center unique?
Debi: The intention behind it. Every piece of furniture, every service, every scent and sound—it’s all designed with care. And it’s especially for those who care for others. Indigo is a space to remember who you are when you’re not being everything for everyone else.
Q: Any wellness practices you can’t live without?
Debi: Absolutely. Every day, I do some form of intentional movement—stretching, chi gong, something to awaken the energy in my body. I spend time at my altar with meditation or tarot, eat nourishing meals, and get massage therapy regularly. I’ve also built a toolkit I turn to when I’m having a tough time. It’s not about doing all the things—it’s about knowing what works for you and building habits around that.
Q: What would you tell someone who’s just starting their healing journey?
Debi: You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just start. Try a session. Read something that inspires you. Take one small step. Indigo is here to walk with you—wherever you are on your path.
